Tikkun Olam Committee

In Hebrew, Tikkun Olam means “repairing the world.” Temple Israel’s Tikkun Olam committee brings members of the congregation together around issues of social justice. In our activities, we work to act in solidarity with vulnerable communities and build relationships across lines of difference. Temple Israel partners with CHUM to help improve the lives of Duluth community members, through advocacy, volunteerism and fundraising.

A few of our ongoing projects:

  • Yom Kippur food drive

  • Hanukkah hat and glove drive

  • National Night Out

  • Joint Religious Legislative Coalition’s annual Day on the Hill

  • Collecting tuna for the CHUM foodshelf

  • Sponsoring the Lifehouse Prom

  • Annual Beach Sweep

  • Serving Christmas dinner at Union Gospel Mission

Please take a second to complete the City's annual survey about spending priorities. CHUM relies on this funding for shelter operations and the Steve O'Neil housing.

What are your priorities for Duluth? The City of Duluth needs your feedback to define priorities for its Community Development Funding Program. Take the survey today and help shape how the City responds to community needs: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/communityneedstest2

Thanks to all who are bringing tuna for the CHUM food shelf!

  • October: 143 can

We're doing well! Let's all try to to step it up closer to 200 per month, if possible!

Thanks to all who brought warm winter items!

Thank you Holly Church for organizing the drive and thanks to Neil Glazman who brought the items to CHUM. Neil  reported that he delivered 2 hats, 32 pairs of gloves/mittens, 2 scarves and 22 pairs of socks!

Thanks to all who volunteered at the Union Gospel Mission to serve Christmas dinner!

CHUM Annual Meeting

Please consider attending the CHUM Annual Meeting, being held at Temple Israel on Tuesday, February 19, at 6:30.

Five to six volunteers will be needed that night and we will need treats to be served to approximately 125 attendees.

Let Debbie Freedman or Hannah Lieberman know if you can help!

Upcoming Social Justice Opportunities

JLRC Day on the Hill

The joint religious legislative coalition will have its annual lobby day on February 7th. Members of Temple Israel are invited to attend.

This year JLRC will be advocating for Affordable Housing, Child Care, and Food Security. Your voice is powerful and it matters. Come use it with us during Day On The Hill to talk to your legislators about your experiences and what matters to you! Scholarships are available.

If you haven’t done so, please check out JRLC’s 2019 Legislative Agenda.

Please register for the event through JRLC and then let CHUM know you are going to attend.
